Just Don’t Be Silent. Speak Up for the Ocean

For Ocean Day 2025, we brought together voices from past missions and projects to show that turning silence into ocean action starts with speaking up.

Have you ever felt like that person at a dinner party?
The one who turns a perfectly normal conversation into a passionate TED Talk about ghost nets and marine animals?
The one who casually suggests a group beach cleanup during a night out?
The one whose WhatsApp voice notes start with “Have you seen this documentary?!” and end with half the group googling “marine litter”?

Yeah, same.

If you’ve ever felt like the weirdly enthusiastic ocean friend, we made this video for you. For Ocean Day 2025, we wanted to show that you’re not the only one who cares deeply about the sea. Not even close.

The Silent Majority… Isn’t So Silent After All

According to a 2025 Guardian article, 89% of people worldwide want more to be done for the climate—but most assume others don’t care as much. This creates a spiral of silence: a perception that holding strong environmental views makes you the odd one out.

But what if that same silence surrounds ocean conservation?

What if…

  • more people than you think want to protect marine life?
  • your voice could help others feel less alone?
  • the ocean just needs you to speak first?

So What Can You Actually Do?

You don’t need to swim marathons or start a nonprofit.
Here are some real ideas from the friends and partners of Healthy Seas— kids, educators, divers, scientists, businessmen, and everyday ocean nerds:

🫧 Start local.
Find a cleanup near you—or organize your own. (Snacks help, ice cream in summer!)

🫧 Talk about it.
Whether it’s over coffee, in class, at work, or online. Just start the conversation.

🫧 Teach someone.
A child, a colleague, a curious friend. Pass it on.

🫧 Get creative.
Make art from waste. Design with circularity in mind. Tell stories. Use your skills.

🫧 Support science and education.
Donate, volunteer, amplify. It all counts.

🫧 Vote with the ocean in mind.
From local choices to national policies, let your voice ripple outward.

🫧 This isn’t a complete list—far from it.
There are so many projects, events, and ideas already out there—probably happening right now, and maybe even right near you. Think of this as just a nudge, a starting point. Take a moment to search what’s going on in your area or in the spaces you care about, and find your own way in. What matters is keeping the ocean in the conversation—and turning that into action.

The Ocean Needs All of Us

And maybe, so does your group chat.
So don’t hold back your next marine rant. Don’t mute your passion. Don’t be silent.
Speak up. Act out. Dive in.
And together, we’ll flood the silence.

💙
Happy World Ocean Day from all of us at Healthy Seas.
