Stopping Marine Litter Before It Starts

Stopping Marine Litter Before It Starts

Partnering with Fishermen and Fish Farmers to Turn Waste into Waves of Change

Prevention

While clean-ups are crucial, prevention must be at the heart of our efforts to address marine litter. Our goal is to close the tap on marine litter by ensuring that waste does not end up in the ocean in the first place. We work closely with fishing communities, harbour authorities, waste management companies, and the fish farming industry to achieve
this. Our efforts focus on recovering old nets and recycling them with our partners , but prevention extends beyond collection. It involves educating industry stakeholders on best practices for net use and disposal and fostering collaborations that advance circular economy solutions . By partnering with the fishing industry and exploring innovative recycling methods, we ensure that materials are kept in use and waste is minimized, transforming potential pollutants into valuable resources.

What We Do

Partnering with Fisherman communities and harbour authorities

Fisherman, harbour and waste management

Through a fruitful collaboration initiated in 2014 between the municipality, harbour personnel, and Healthy Seas, 40 fishing boats based at the port of Den Oever in The Netherlands actively collect their waste fishing nets for our cause.

This partnership not only facilitates the collection of fishing nets but also actively engages the fishermen from this community in our mission and journey from waste to wear.

Partnering with the fish farming industry

for waste management and circular solutions

We collaborate with the fish farming industry to recover old fish farming nets at the end of their lifecycle, ensuring they are recycled by our funding partner, Aquafil, along with other nylon waste.

Our efforts also focus on fostering connections and developing circular solutions within the industry.
For instance, our partnership with Diopas, a leading Greek expert in fish farming, goes beyond merely collecting nets for recycling. Together with Aquafil, Diopas has recently developed the first 100% recycled and recyclable fish farming net.
