Inspiring Young Ocean Guardians: Healthy Seas at St. Catherine’s School, Athens
A month-long learning journey about marine conservation, culminating in creativity and shared knowledge
On February 19th, Healthy Seas joined a special event at St. Catherine’s British School in Athens, marking the final step of an inspiring educational journey about ocean conservation. Over the past month, students in years 1 and 2 of lower school explored the challenges facing our seas —particularly the threat of ghost nets and marine litter—with a unique focus on seahorses.
Seahorses, an endangered species often overshadowed by more well-known marine animals, face significant risks from pollution and habitat destruction. To raise awareness, Healthy Seas developed a set of educational tools to help teachers introduce these important topics in the classroom. Through interactive lessons, students learned about the delicate balance of marine ecosystems and the impact of human activity on underwater life.
As part of their learning experience, the students created their own artistic representations of seahorses and their habitats, ranging from drawings to dioramas to ceramics. The February 19th event provided a platform for them to showcase their work to their classmates, their older peers in primary, teachers and parents. The day was filled with activities, including exhibitions and presentations where students proudly shared their newfound knowledge.
The enthusiasm of the children was matched by the appreciation of their teachers, who found Healthy Seas’ educational materials invaluable in guiding their lessons. With a general lack of structured resources on marine conservation for younger students (kindergarten and first grades of primary), This initiative provided a much-needed framework for engaging younger students (kindergarten and first grades of primary in hands-on learning about complex ocean challenges and ways to take action.
Healthy Seas was honored to be part of this journey for the third year and to witness the excitement of young minds discovering the importance of protecting our oceans and spreading the word to their community through their inspiring projects. Encouraging the next generation to become ocean guardians is at the heart of our mission, and events like this show how education can make a real impact.
