Educating for a Sustainable Tomorrow:

Empowering 800+ Students with the “Circularity is our Opportunity” Program

In the ever-evolving world of sustainability, educating the younger generation about the importance of circular economy principles is essential. In the 2022/2023 academic year, the “Circularity is our Opportunity” module, supported by our founding partner AquafilSLO and enriched with educational activities also provided by Healthy Seas, made its debut at the program Eco-Schools in Slovenia. The response was overwhelming, with 40 schools and over 800 students enthusiastically participating in lessons and activities aimed at exploring and learning about the principles, goals, and role of the circular economy.

The core objective of “Circularity is our Opportunity” is to instill the fundamentals and principles of the circular economy into young learners’ minds. Through engaging sessions, these students were exposed to the significance of sustainable practices, resource conservation, and waste reduction – a holistic perspective that will undoubtedly shape their future choices.

At the heart of the project was a Design Challenge that encouraged students to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios, igniting their creativity and problem-solving skills. The results were remarkable, as the students explored different materials and products in order to find more innovative, sustainable, and circular alternatives.

Moreover, some schools and mentors have involved parents and local community members in their circular economy initiatives. This outreach effort aimed to create a ripple effect of sustainability beyond the classroom.

Out of the 40 participating schools, 11 were chosen to be awarded for their exceptional work within the “Circularity is our Opportunity” module. These schools demonstrated extraordinary enthusiasm, commitment, and leadership in promoting the circular economy principles, not only within their school but also within their broader communities.

As we look back on the program’s first year, it’s obvious that “Circularity is our Opportunity” has made a lasting impact on the students involved. This initiative, which imparts knowledge and nurtures a passion for sustainability, is shaping a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders. We’re excited about the ongoing influence of this remarkable initiative in the coming years.

The project will continue in the school year 2023-2024.
