Arena & Olympic Athlete Drew Kibler Partners with Healthy Seas

Arena and Healthy Seas recently teamed up with their top athlete, Drew Kibler, to lead a vital cleanup along the California coastline. This impactful mission targeted the removal of discarded fishing nets from the historic Tuna Clipper wreck. Olympic swimmer Drew Kibler, who took an active role in removing harmful waste from the ocean, reflected on this experience as “life-changing.”

Despite some early challenges with weather and sea conditions, the mission was a resounding success. Together with volunteer divers from Ghost Diving and the Healthy Seas team, the group spent hours tackling marine waste, forming strong bonds and a shared sense of purpose.

The Tuna Clipper is a tuna boat that sank off the west end of Catalina Island after hitting Johnson’s Rock in the middle of the night in 1985. There were 12 people on board, and all were rescued by Bay Watch. The wreck currently lies at a depth of approximately 52 metres and is completely covered in ghost nets (trawler and purse seine nets).

This event exemplified how athletes like Kibler can inspire environmental stewardship. His enthusiasm for the mission, from the first dive to the final moments on the boat, is a powerful reminder of the positive change that sports figures can bring to global causes.
