Where Champions and Students Team Up to Protect the Blue Planet

In a memorable day at the Wattenmeer Besucherzentrum in Cuxhaven sport, education and ocean protection came together. Arena and the Healthy Seas Foundation welcomed Olympic swimmer and double World Champion Leonie Beck. This event marked the third joint mission of 2025 in Europe, with only the final USA mission remaining in the year-long collaboration to raise awareness for marine conservation.

From Classroom to Coastline

Over 60 students from the Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium gathered for an impactful day dedicated to learning about marine litter, sustainability, and the importance of protecting the ocean. Through an interactive presentation we explored the impact of marine waste and ways to prevent it, followed by a lively Q&A session with Leonie Beck. Students eagerly asked Leonie questions for 45 minutes and showed their curiosity and engagement in sustainability and marine conservation. “How does it feel like to win?”  and “what thoughts do you have when swimming?” were some examples of questions the kids had for Leonie.

Leonie shared insights into her swimming career, her passion for open water, and her personal journey towards sustainability. Students were inspired to see her gold World Championship gold medal up close and learn about circular economy.

Hands-On Ocean Action

The educational program concluded with a hands-on beach cleanup, where students joined Leonie and the Healthy Seas team to remove litter from the shoreline.

A Growing Partnership for Ocean Protection

This mission in Germany continues the ongoing collaboration between arena and Healthy Seas, which combines sports, education, and environmental stewardship. The partnership empowers young people to see themselves as guardians of the ocean and encourages action in their communities. The next joint mission will take place in USA.
