Nestled in the charming coastal town of Ika (Opatija) in northern Croatia, lies an extraordinary annual event known as Liburnicon. Opatija, often referred to as the “Monte Carlo” of the Adriatic, is home to the University of Tourism, which hosts this unique festival. The Fantasy & SF Festival Liburnicon is a celebration of fantasy, culture, and creativity that unfolds during the bustling tourist season, providing a distinctive experience for both locals and visitors.

At Liburnicon, attendees have the opportunity to delve into the realms of fantasy, literature, and culture. This fantastical journey spans three captivating days and is organized by the university. It offers an array of engaging programs, including insightful presentations, workshops, and interactive discussions. The 18th Fantasy & SF Festival Liburnicon this August was all about exploring the world beneath the surface! Our local education partner Velimir Vrzić was invited to speak about underwater research in the Adriatic Sea and the possibilities of recycling old discarded fishing gear into new products like clothes or carpets.

With about 900 people who registered for the festival beforehand, visitor numbers were high. Students, faculty members, guests, and tourists came together and made this spectacular two-day event memorable.
